PostHeaderIcon Real Men Don’t Plan Weddings

Most of you know that my podcast co-host, best friend and overall “main squeeze” Emily and I are getting married in December. I couldn’t be a happier guy about that. After all, she’s a fantastic woman. This means, of course, we’ve spent much of the last month since our engagement (which happened during “X and Y On The Fly” podcast episode 11) planning our wedding and everything associated with it. Over the course of that relatively brief period of time, I’ve already come to a profound conclusion.

Real men don’t plan weddings.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that real men don’t get married. Quite the contrary. Most good men seek to find genuine love with one great woman sooner than later, and look forward to coming home to her every night. And that’s a great thing.

That said, however, I believe I’ve come up with a previously undetected reason why men seem to have trouble taking that step towards the “lifetime commitment” of marriage. Thousands (if not millions) of women everywhere have long wondered how a man can be so eager to have her around month after month without “popping the question”. Months can turn into years, and still no ring and no date.

Is it really that all of these men are “commitment phobes” who are looking for “better options”?

Possibly. But if that were the case, why would those same guys be spending so much time sitting around watching the tube and drinking beer instead of searching out “options”? It all just doesn’t add up, does it?

Well, ladies (and gentlemen), the sensible explanation for all of this is disarmingly simple, although most likely subliminal in the mind of every guy it affects.

It’s not that we’re afraid of marriage or commitment. It’s that we are utterly terrified of planning the wedding.

I first presented this groundbreaking hypothesis to Emily, and was met with skepticism. “Oh, c’mon. How can that be? Putting all of this together is exciting. Don’t you think it is fun?”

I responded simply. “I’d rather do sudoku puzzles.”

She looked at me in shock. After all, I’d famously rather do my taxes and / or watch paint dry than touch any blasted sudoku puzzle with a ten-foot pencil. At least tax returns involve number crunching that is actually necessary and may result in a refund check.

“Seriously…”, I elaborated, “…name one guy you’ve ever known who was excited about planning his wedding.”

She named a few. After brief consideration, I countered that those guys had to have been merely demonstrating “sympathy excitement”, which doesn’t count.

I therefore revised my challenge. “OK…well…short of anyone who is a clinically-problematic ‘control freak’, name one guy who ended up arranging all the details himself, according to his own thoughts and wishes.”

“Yeah, well…you’ve got me there.”, Emily retorted, punctuated with a snicker.

Really now. It’s a downright silly thought. What guy feels that passionately towards flowers, table settings, elaborate dresses and throwing social parties? Even if he did, there’s no way he could wrestle control of such from the bride while remaining engaged.

Exactly! Wedding ceremonies and receptions are all about the bride. I mean, the guy involved doesn’t even have a real title–he’s just there to “groom” the bride! Therefore, everything involved with planning such things is utterly feminine.

Us guys really find it all rather tedious. To us wedding planning is like one big, protracted trek to the mall for shoe shopping.

Oh sure. We go along when absolutely necessary to “show support” and to make sure “we approve”. But heaven help us if we didn’t “approve” of something along the way. It would mean being dragged to more prospective “settings” festooned with Gazebos and year-round Christmas lights. So the women…Emily included…typically get the rubber stamp from the “Groom”.

Guys like me would have been happy just to go to the JP and get on with it, maybe draining a few “cold ones” afterwards. Even when wrapped up in a more “formal” wedding, we all don’t want or need any elaborate consideration. Just rent me the same tux the other guys are wearing. No biggee.

Despite my ranting, all of this deep thought really has helped me put things into perspective and I accept my short-term lot in life gladly. I won’t begrudge the bride her wedding planning bliss one bit.

Here’s why.

For a woman, this really is her one chance (hopefully) to live out all of her fantasies associated with being a “Disney Princess” and throwing the big party to back it up.

Obviously, every business owner who ever touches a wedding already knows this. I’ve dealt with ten years’ worth of obnoxious, abrasive people in the last few weeks, all of whom clearly on the immediate defensive vis-è• -vis a steady parade of highly-demanding “bridezillas” who demanded perfection. This, of course, only contributed to how much more loathsome the entire process became for me. And this was before my realization that uttering the very word “wedding” triggers a “surcharge mechanism”‘. Painful.

“So…” Emily later said, “…your demeanor has changed about all this wedding stuff. What’s up with that?”

My reply was thought out ahead of time and therefore clearly stated, “Lookit. I’m fortunate to be a guy. I theoretically get several chances at making certain lifetime dreams go off perfectly. If, however, I only had one chance on one particular day to get one car that I wanted–and was committed to it for life–I would take a lot of time in getting ready for that.”

“And I’d support you through that process 100%.”, she said. “But I would be bored to tears every minute of it.”

PostHeaderIcon Hen Nights

Hen Nights or a Hen party is organized to celebrate the impending marriage of a woman. As the name suggest, the attendees of the party are all females, apart from the male entertainers if any. A concession is also made for friends of the bride who are gay. If you want to hold a hen night, there are numerous ideas and options, which can make the night memorable for everyone concerned.

For starters, you can hold the hen night at a club. These are definitely some of the things that a woman will not be allowed to do when she gets married. It is that one chance to go all out and have some good fun. Hen night’s can also be held at home. Moreover, at home the options just open up. There are a host of games and activities that can add that extra spice to the hen night. A pamper party, is one where all the friends of the prospective bride take turns in pampering her. The idea might just sound a tad boring when you read it, but when you actually are a part of it; the fun can just take your breath away.

Hen nights can also be occasions when you compare adventurous products like lingerie. Some of the risquè(c) games that can be played at hen nights are amongst others, ‘consequences’, ‘truth or dare’, or ‘pass the balloon’. If the details of organizing a hen nights get a little bit too much for you then you can take the help of a myriad of specialist organizers who take the pressure off your shoulders. Moreover, they can arrange a hen night that you might just not have thought possible. Some of the popular options for hen nights include spending a night in the ‘City of Sin’, Las Vegas or any other party hotspots where women can just let go of all their inhibitions.

In a survey conducted recently, it was estimated that only around 20% of hen nights have the presence of a male stripper. But yes, usually hen nights have an erotic theme, and large sprinkling of drinks, and adult games. And, no hen night can be complete without womanly gossip, Can It! If you go to some of the happening bars in your town, don’t be surprised to see a hen night going on. On such occasion it will not be too difficult to spot the bride-to-be as she will wear something that marks her out as the bride. Hen nights and intoxication are synonymous with each other so please stock up on your drinks before organizing one. Alcohol usually helps women to lighten up. Then they can have some pure and unadulterated fun.

Hen nights are known by a host of names in various countries. Called the bachelorette party in the US, it is called a hen party in the UK, and in Canada it is know by the term ‘stagette’. But, wherever you go the idea remains the same: An exciting night out for the women, with the women and made up only of women!

PostHeaderIcon Fun Bridal Shower Games

One of the most exciting parts of a bridal shower is the fun games you get to play. These games can have a variety of purposes. They can be ice breaker games to help guests get to know one another. They can be games where your guests can win prizes to take home. They could also just be games to help guests enjoy their time at the bridal shower.

One of the most popular games at every bridal shower is bridal bingo. For this game, you will need as many bingo cards as you have guests. Fifteen is a good number of base bingo cards to start with. You will also need a list of the words on the bingo cards. Be sure to cut them up so you can pull them out of a hat or some similar container. You will need to give each guest a card. You could, though, have them share cards if you prefer. That might also be a good way to break the ice among guests who have no connection to each other except the bride. All of the bingo cards should have words on them that are associated with weddings, wedding gifts, or romance. In the center of the card should be a free space that can work with any type of line. The hostess should act as the bingo caller. She should pull the small pieces of paper out of the hat and call out each word. When the guest has a word on her card, she should mark through it with her pencil. If a guest can mark through a complete line of words in a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal method, she should shout “Bingo.” The host should check her card, and if, indeed, she has gotten all of the words, she will be deemed the winner of that game. The winner should receive some sort of wedding favor prize. There are a number of free printable cards on the internet along with word lists to help you in planning for this great game.

Another fun game to play at a bridal shower is a bridal word scramble. Each guest will be given a sheet with a number of different words related to weddings scrambled on them. Guests will also need a writing utensil for this game. The words should be fairly easy to solve, and obviously wedding related. For example, you could use “edwdngi” as wedding for one of the words. Set a time limit, something like ten minutes usually works well, and the guest who can unscramble the most words in ten minutes wins the game.

An additional great game to play at bridal showers involves the names of famous couples. Give guests a sheet of paper with some famous couple halves on them. For example, you could have Michael Douglas as one entry. The other half, Catherine Zeta Jones, is what your guests would have to guess. Some other good entries for this game would be Popeye and Olive Oyl, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Baucall, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Al and Tipper Gore, and Homer and Marge Simpson. Come up with as many as you can. Again, you will need to set a time limit here, and ten minutes seems to work well. The guest who gets the most couples correct wins.

A third great game to play is the “don’t say or do game”. This also makes a wonderful ice breaker for your guests. Each guest wears a clothes pin attached to their clothing. The guests are informed that there are three words that they cannot say. Words like “bride,” “groom,” and “wedding” work well. If any guest hears another guest say these words, that guest can demand their clothes pin. At the end of the game, which is typically the end of the wedding shower, the guest who has managed to obtain the most clothes pins wins.

Another good game is the purse scavenger hunt. Guests are given a list of the items that might be found in a purse. Each guest marks off the item as she hunts through her purse. The guest with the most items in her purse wins the game.

An additional game to play at a bridal shower is a version of memory. Guests are shown a tray of items. The tray should have twenty or so wedding related items. Show it to each of the guests for a few seconds. After the tray has been removed from the vicinity, guests are to list as many items as they can remember on a sheet of paper. The guest who lists the most items on the paper wins the game.

One last good idea for a game to play at your upcoming bridal shower is herbs and spices. Place ten paper cups on a tray or a table. Number them one to ten, and have each guest smell the spices and herbs in the cups. Then have the guests write down what they think each spice or herb is. The guest who guesses the most wins the game.

There are a number of different games you can play at your next bridal shower, but remember that the goal of any of them is fun.

PostHeaderIcon Stag Weekends

Stag weekends are essentially; weekends with the boys before a person gets married. Stag weekends are generally the extension of what is commonly known as the bachelor party. Stag weekends are used to celebrate the bachelorhood of single males and the impending marriage of one of their friends. They are usually undertaken, so that a man might engage in few activities that his future wife might not like. It is also a weekend where you can spend time bonding with your friends, one last time before the wedding.

Typically, stag weekends go beyond the normal activities and concentrate on some real fun. People usually stay away from the common ‘fun’ activities like gambling, drinking, gaming and go for something much bigger. Though stag weekends do not have a traditional connotation, people do conform to a few time tested activities like playing pranks on the future groom. Stag weekends are generally treated as a rite of passage from a life of independence to a life of being responsible for someone else.

The whole idea of stag weekends is to have unsurpassed fun by doing something exciting, away from the normal course of events. Stag weekends have to be memorable and must configure to give the ultimate experience to the husband-to-be. A corollary of stag weekends is that it takes away a lot of the nervousness associated with ceremony of marriage and all its sundry association. It’s a way of telling the prospective groom, to have fun while it lasts!

If you are one of the chosen ones, who has to organize the stage weekend, then you must begin by penning down a whole bunch of adventurous ideas. Don’t keep it simple. Make it complex and exciting. Go into the fine details and gather information about the best of stag weekend packages. Your stag weekend must involve a lot of partying so it is important to choose just the right kind of hotel, and nightclubs to rock the nights away. To make sure that the stage weekend passes without a hitch, you must do some effective planning.

There are an innumerable number of organizers who can take the load of your shoulders. If you do not want to take outside help to organize stag weekends then you must think innovative ideas that can surprise your friends. One of the options that is fast gaining popularity is to spend a weekend in a new city and enjoy the sights and sounds of that city. Another option can take you on a diametrically opposite route. You can make your way to the rural countryside and book a country cottage for the weekend. Off the beaten track stag weekends will definitely be a revelation.

The purpose of stag weekends is to get WILD. It must be a no-holes-barred attack on undiluted frolic. So make good preparations and go for something that is innovative, previously not done, and extremely exhilarating!

PostHeaderIcon How To Fix your Marriage without Professional Help

Marriages can have troubled times. Maybe it’s because of infidelity or the quiet drifting apart of a long term marriage – in any case, when your marriage is having tough times, you need help to make things right again. However, not everyone has the resources or the time to seek professional help. The good news is that you can fix your relationship without a therapist, though you might need a therapist in the future.

For now, you have each other

When you’re hitting a rough spot in your marriage, it’s time to talk about why you want to save the marriage first. Sit down with your partner and start to discuss things that are keeping your together and memories that remind you of better times. You might want to sit down with photo albums and journals to talk about the times when you used to laugh, when you used to be happy. Many times, this simple exercise can help to put your current problems into perspective and help to put you on a positive path to a healthy relationship.

Make a promise

Too many times, we are afraid to make promises to our partner because we’re afraid that we won’t be able to follow through, that we won’t be able to be perfect in everything we do. However, the truth is that no one is perfect – we can only try our best. If you’re in a hard spot with your marriage, you will want to make a promise to each other that you will do the best that you can to make things better between the both of you. Promise to do whatever it takes and that you will give all of your free time and attention to fixing whatever has been broken. And then stick to that promise.

Realize that you’re not going to be perfect

Even in therapy, couples aren’t perfect with rebuilding their relationship. Things go wrong, life can throw curve balls, and people can make mistakes – you will not always do everything right. But what matters is that you try to move toward doing what’s best for your relationship. To go into fixing your marriage, thinking that everything is going to be easy and without flaws is just not realistic. Try to do the best that you can, but forgive yourself and forgive your spouse when you’re not able to choose the right thing. It’s how you recover and learn from these mistakes that will make your marriage stronger in the end.

Set aside some time to work on your relationship

You will need to set up some time in which you can work through your problems and your issues. Much like traditional therapy, you might want to schedule in appointments with each other in order to have time to talk. Try to make this time as uninterruptible as possible so that you’re not distracted by anything else – so that you can focus on your marriage. You might want to set up time away from your living space in order to bring a new perspective to your discussions. Maybe heading out for a hike or to a spa for a day will help you both change your feelings about whatever you are talking about – and help you resolve it.

You don’t have to do what everyone else has done

Your relationship needs specific tools to be fixed, but the way that works for you might not be the way that works for everyone else. This is why communicating with each other is so important. When you’re able to talk honestly about your feelings and about your needs, you will be able to create plans that make sense for the way that you want things to work out. Your methods might not be ‘normal’, but if they’re making your relationship happier and healthier, it only matters what works.

Get the tools

But there’s nothing stopping you from looking at the writings of therapists and other experienced authors. Bookstores have sections devoted to healing marriages and getting past any number of relationship battles. In a pinch, you can also head to the library for a free assortment of self help tools. The point is that you find something that works for you and your relationship, so it might take time to find the right book.

The bridal shower is traditionally a day that celebrates the bride and the beginning of her new life. The shower is usually hosted by the maid or matron of honor or a close relative and organized by the bridesmaids. Bridal showers range from extremely luxurious to sweet and simple. In general, guests should include the mothers of the bride and groom; the sisters of the bride and groom, and all of her intimate friends. PostHeaderIcon Great Looking And Cheap Bridal Shoes

Most brides can quickly end up spending thousands of dollars for one special day in their life. This is fin and you want everything to be the absolutely magical for your wedding. However if there are some ways to save money then why not? It is always great to save money and still look great. Cheap bridal shoes are a good way to cut costs.

Cheap bridal shoes do not have to look cheap, old fashioned or out of style. There are where you can purchase elegant but cheap wedding shoes if you only know where to look.

Great Sources For Cheap Bridal Shoes

There are numerous ways to find cheap bridal shoes. Two of the best ways are to look at local bridal shops and at department stores. They often offer cheap bridal shoes with designer inspired styles.

For example if you are looking for a great pair of Vera Wang bridal shoes why not look at department stores. Often they will carry a wide variety of Vera Wang inspired shoes. These will be made by other manufacturers many you have probably never heard of. However for many the name of the shoe makes matter less then the design. So if you are looking for a great design but cheaper wedding shoe then a Vera Wang inspired shoe is a great way to go.

Macys is a great department store to try. They often carry a wide variety of designs by lesser known manufacturers but will be able to pass the savings on to you. Keep in mind that they are somewhat limited and you might not find the hottest Jimmy Choo designer wedding shoe but you can often find something that will work for your situation.

Cheap bridal shoes can be found at many different stores in a variety of styles if you do some work and look hard to find the best deals. You can often find peep-toe, ankle strap, pumps and sandals in various colors and styles. You can also purchase a pair of dyeable cheap bridal shoes if you want the color of the shoe to match a certain color used in your wedding.

When To Shop For Cheap Bridal Shoes

Knowing where to shop is half the battle and a great way to get discounted brial shoes. However if you want the best quality and true rock bottom prices then you have to not only know where to shop but when to shop also. You can often find your discount bridal shoes for the best possible price when you know the specific month when they will be on sale.

You can often simply ask at your local bridal shop when the shoes go on sale. Generally speaking however there are certain times of year when the shoes go on sale. For example often in the month of January after the holiday season shoes will go on sale. Then again in October a few weeks after the back to school rush. However just to be sure and know your particular location it cant hurt to ask.

Also you want to understand how season inventory works. All clothing inventory is seasonal and changes with the four seasons. For example an open toe bridal sandal is going to look kind of strange in the middle of winter. So often at the end of a season as the new clothes hit the market stores are forced to sell off their existing inventory to make way for the new shoes. So if you are having a wedding in the late Spring then this year right after that time passes go in a snag a good deal on heavily discounted designer inspired bridal shoes. If you are have a winter wedding then go in late August and pick up a great deal on your wedding shoes.

There are a lot of different ways to save big money on your wedding shoes and if they look almost the same as the more expensive version then why not save the extra buck. It always helps a new struggling family out to have a little extra money for the things ahead…

PostHeaderIcon A Wedding Menu

Some of your wedding guests may be traveling great distances to get to your wedding. Some may even be flying to get to your wedding. Should you serve them the same type of meal that they got on the plane or should you serve them something better? I have included a menu below which is presented as an alternative to the usual wedding menu of baked chicken or broiled fish, vegetable, and roll.

This menu was served at a great price. Our caterer is exceptional. He has experience in some of the best restaurants in Washington, DC. Because of this, he likes to prepare more complicated meals than the usual wedding menu. He worked with my future wife to prepare this menu. I am hoping that you will find some great ideas from it. For example, we are having cupcakes presented on a tiered fashion that looks like a wedding cake instead of the wedding cake. Why? Our wedding is outdoors. We have many children in attendance. Finally, we wanted to end the meal in a less formal manner.

Enjoy the menu.

PostHeaderIcon Bridal Jewelry – Tradition Vs Modern

Bridal jewelry is the final touch that pulls the entire bridal look together with the bridal gown and hair. Selecting the bridal gown is the first and most important part, but the selection of the bridal jewelry is the icing on the cake. With bridal gown designers creating more varieties of dresses, the bridal jewelry industry must keep up. Many bridal gowns now have either pearl or swarovski crystal embellishments or a combination of both, leaving more options available for the selection of the bridal jewelry that will match.

Typically, in tradition, brides wore white or ivory pearls for their wedding day bridal jewelry. Whether the bride inherited the pearl bridal jewelry she wore on her wedding day or purchased new pearl bridal jewelry, pearls were what was traditionally worn for bridal jewelry. Many brides are still choosing to wear the traditional pearls for their bridal jewelry. Whether their mothers or grandmothers are passing down a family heirloom, or they are purchasing new pearl bridal jewelry, pearls are still a popular selection for many brides. Many bridal gowns available are embellished with pearls in the design of the bridal gown.
