Marriage Counsellor: Analyzing Criticisms
Couples engaged in a power struggle are often very critical of one another. The natural tendency for a partner when criticized is to become defensive which only serves to heighten and prolong the power struggle. However, when analyzed criticisms can be extremely valuable sources of information and can help couples to gain new understanding and insight into themselves, their partners and their relationship.
First of all, a marriage counsellor has to work with the couple to open them up to the notion that one’s own perceptions offer a limited view of reality. When one becomes aware of and receptive to the views of their partner, a whole world of information is now available to them. So instead of defending themselves when criticized, partners can analyze the criticism and see if there is any truth there and look for insights and try to gain knowledge.
Criticisms can contain much hidden information, not only about the person being criticized but also about the criticizer as well. An important realization about criticisms in a relationship is that they have some basis in reality. Partners generally are very aware of their partners’ negative traits and weak spots but often point these out in an accusatory manner, which elicits a defensive reaction. When a partner can overcome the need to be defensive and see the truth in a criticism, awareness can develop regarding a possible disowned trait and furthermore, the tendency to project this trait onto the criticizer can also be eliminated.
An individual can also analyze their criticisms of their partner to gain insight regarding their own wounds suffered in childhood. Let’s look at an example of a common criticism like “you are so disorganized”. When a person can be shown to analyze this statement to reveal their underlying thoughts and feelings and ask themselves if they ever had these thoughts and feelings as a child some important discoveries can be made. In this case it may be that this individuals parents were very disorganized which left them unable to be attentive to their needs as a child. Therefore, when their partner acts in a similar manner it creates a feeling of being not taken care of.
It can be seen then that criticisms, especially the repetitious, ongoing and emotional ones, are often disguised statements of ones’ own unmet needs. Further, one can analyze a criticism to see if actually they are guilty of the same thing. A person can ask themselves, “In what way is my criticism of my partner also true of me?” In this way it can be revealed if the criticism is an attempt to deal with a disowned part of oneself by externalizing it and projecting it onto the partner. This can greatly assist a person to psychologically own the projection and withdraw it.
Therefore, through analyzing criticisms, an individual may be able to make an important discovery concerning disowned parts of themselves. Further, a person may make the distinction that the criticism actually is a description not of their disowned self, but of their lost self. In the above example, a person may scrutinize their behaviour and find that they are indeed very organized. Thus the criticism of the partner may reflect the unconscious need to be less organized and more spontaneous and carefree. The criticism actually is a resentment of the partners’ perceived freedom and represents a repressed or undeveloped issue that they can now address.
An analysis of criticisms can provide extremely valuable information about both partners in a marriage. The knowledge gained from this insight can be converted into a growth-inducing process. When the underlying basis for criticisms are discovered, partners can work towards alleviating or resolving the unmet or repressed needs and begin to help each other on the path to wholeness.

10 Tips To Overcome Cold Feet Prior To A Wedding
Feelings of anxiety and concern are completely normal prior to a wedding. One or both members of the couple may experience the cold feet phenomenon that overshadows them and causes them to become concerned over their upcoming wedding. Usually this feeling is not a cause for concern and it passes naturally on its own as your realize that you are more excited than anxious but the following are a few tips for helping to work through your cold feet issues.
The first tip for dealing with cold feet is simply to relax and realize that this happens to a lot of people in your situation. This is important because many people will get caught up in believing that these feelings mean that they shouldn’t go through with their wedding. Realizing that your feelings are completely naturally will help to waylay these fears.
After you calm down, get out a piece of paper and pen and just start listing all of your anxiety. This is particular helpful because you may have a great deal of trouble doing this which is significant because it helps you to realize that you don’t really have anything to worry about. The other scenario is that you may find that you have a long list of fears and may be amused to find that none of them are really logical. Sometimes seeing your concerns listed on paper helps to alleviate them.
Another tip for dealing with cold feet is to talk to your partner about your feelings. Many people are hesitant to this because they are embarrassed about their feelings but talking to your loved one can really help in this situation. Chances are that they know you better than anyone and can assist you working through these things. They may even confess similar feelings which helps you to realize that cold feet are completely natural.
If you feel that talking to your partner will further exacerbate the problem consider talking to a close friend instead. Just talking about your anxiety can help to relieve the tension. Once you verbalize your fears you are likely to find that they begin to dissipate and you start to relax and look forward to your upcoming wedding.
Another tip for dealing with cold feet is to talk to a friend who has recently married to get their perspective on married life. They will be able to tell you how well things are going for them which should ease your fears about the transition to married life. They will also be able to assure you that they had similar feelings of anxiety and that there is no cause for concern.
Making two lists; one of your fears and one of your reasons for marrying your partner, can help to alleviate cold feet. Once you make this list you will most likely see that the reasons that you want to get married far outweigh your fears. Sometimes just seeing this on paper is very beneficial to eliminating cold feet.
Writing a love letter to your partner can be another way to combat the feelings of cold feet. This process gives you a chance to ponder all the reasons why you love your partner. Expressing your feelings in a love letter can refocus your attention on what you love most about your partner and make you realize that the small things you are worrying about are really inconsequential.
Going through old photos of you and your partner can also help to ease the anxiety of cold fit. Looking through pictures from your courtship is a great way to remind you of all the fun times you and your partner have had together and will help you realize that there are still lots of fun times together in store for the two of you.
Spending some time away from the planning process is another way to help alleviate cold feet. Wedding anxiety is often spurred on by other problems such as the stresses of the wedding planning. This stress can put you on edge and make problems seem bigger than they really are. Take a trip to spa or spend an afternoon participating in an activity you enjoy to take your mind off of all the details that are still remaining for a little while.
Finally, if after examining the reason for your cold feet, you come to realize that there are serious issues at hand it is advisable to postpone the wedding until these issues can be resolved. If your concerns are valid and your relationship is potentially harmful either physically or emotionally you may need to seek professional help. Issues such as abuse, addiction and betrayal can be reasons to cancel a wedding and discontinue the relationship.
Cold feet of feelings of anxiety over your impending wedding are perfectly normal. Many brides and grooms have these feelings and in most cases they are completely harmless. It is, however, important to trust your instincts and if there is something seriously wrong with your relationship, it may be wise to cancel the wedding.

Wedding Favors, Mementoes That Say Thank you
Wedding favors have been used by wedding couples for over 500 years to say thank you to their guests at their wedding. Originally called Bombonieres they were given by French and Italian aristocracy in expensive fine porcelain or precious metal boxes to present five candies representing fertility, health, wealth, happiness and longevity. Even the sugar coating to the sweet almonds from Jordan was expensive so only the rich and famous gave their guest such expensive presents as mementoes. Originally favors were given not just for weddings but at other celebrations too. Favors were given at anniversaries such as birthdays or baptism parties. Giving favors by tradition has varied with the country. In Spain for instance orange blossom is used while in the Netherlands “bridal sugar” uses the traditional five Jordan Almonds. The way a favour is presented varies too, today the favour is used at the table place to enhance the setting decoration. Although some favors are given out by hand in exchange for a wedding gift.
In spite of the many occasions the wedding is still the main event where favors are used and have come to mean thank you for sharing our wedding with us. Favors of course are not always sweets or candies, there are many practical items used as favors some very important, some less so it is to say “Thank you for sharing our day with us” that makes the favour so significant whatever the cost.
Every couple aspires to have their wedding as special and as memorable as possible and the number of offerings for favors has expanded to include all manner of things. One of the newer arrivals on the wedding favour scene is the use of a personalised perfume as a memorable favour. It is said “nothing evokes a memory like a scent” and the fragrance favour presented in a beautiful hand made Thai silk bag in the wedding theme colours is increasingly popular. No doubt the wedding favour offerings will continue to expand over the years and personal fragrances for the wedding will find their palace alongside the traditional candies.

Fun Bridal Shower Games
One of the most exciting parts of a bridal shower is the fun games you get to play. These games can have a variety of purposes. They can be ice breaker games to help guests get to know one another. They can be games where your guests can win prizes to take home. They could also just be games to help guests enjoy their time at the bridal shower.
One of the most popular games at every bridal shower is bridal bingo. For this game, you will need as many bingo cards as you have guests. Fifteen is a good number of base bingo cards to start with. You will also need a list of the words on the bingo cards. Be sure to cut them up so you can pull them out of a hat or some similar container. You will need to give each guest a card. You could, though, have them share cards if you prefer. That might also be a good way to break the ice among guests who have no connection to each other except the bride. All of the bingo cards should have words on them that are associated with weddings, wedding gifts, or romance. In the center of the card should be a free space that can work with any type of line. The hostess should act as the bingo caller. She should pull the small pieces of paper out of the hat and call out each word. When the guest has a word on her card, she should mark through it with her pencil. If a guest can mark through a complete line of words in a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal method, she should shout “Bingo.” The host should check her card, and if, indeed, she has gotten all of the words, she will be deemed the winner of that game. The winner should receive some sort of wedding favor prize. There are a number of free printable cards on the internet along with word lists to help you in planning for this great game.
Another fun game to play at a bridal shower is a bridal word scramble. Each guest will be given a sheet with a number of different words related to weddings scrambled on them. Guests will also need a writing utensil for this game. The words should be fairly easy to solve, and obviously wedding related. For example, you could use “edwdngi” as wedding for one of the words. Set a time limit, something like ten minutes usually works well, and the guest who can unscramble the most words in ten minutes wins the game.
An additional great game to play at bridal showers involves the names of famous couples. Give guests a sheet of paper with some famous couple halves on them. For example, you could have Michael Douglas as one entry. The other half, Catherine Zeta Jones, is what your guests would have to guess. Some other good entries for this game would be Popeye and Olive Oyl, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Baucall, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Al and Tipper Gore, and Homer and Marge Simpson. Come up with as many as you can. Again, you will need to set a time limit here, and ten minutes seems to work well. The guest who gets the most couples correct wins.
A third great game to play is the “don’t say or do game”. This also makes a wonderful ice breaker for your guests. Each guest wears a clothes pin attached to their clothing. The guests are informed that there are three words that they cannot say. Words like “bride,” “groom,” and “wedding” work well. If any guest hears another guest say these words, that guest can demand their clothes pin. At the end of the game, which is typically the end of the wedding shower, the guest who has managed to obtain the most clothes pins wins.
Another good game is the purse scavenger hunt. Guests are given a list of the items that might be found in a purse. Each guest marks off the item as she hunts through her purse. The guest with the most items in her purse wins the game.
An additional game to play at a bridal shower is a version of memory. Guests are shown a tray of items. The tray should have twenty or so wedding related items. Show it to each of the guests for a few seconds. After the tray has been removed from the vicinity, guests are to list as many items as they can remember on a sheet of paper. The guest who lists the most items on the paper wins the game.
One last good idea for a game to play at your upcoming bridal shower is herbs and spices. Place ten paper cups on a tray or a table. Number them one to ten, and have each guest smell the spices and herbs in the cups. Then have the guests write down what they think each spice or herb is. The guest who guesses the most wins the game.
There are a number of different games you can play at your next bridal shower, but remember that the goal of any of them is fun.

Stag weekends are essentially; weekends with the boys before a person gets married. Stag weekends are generally the extension of what is commonly known as the bachelor party. How Do You Know When It’s Time To Get Married?
Youve done everything it takes to get your own game together, and youve been a man or woman who deserves what you want for sometime now. In fact, youve found a partner as terrific as you are, and the question has inevitably surfaced: Is it time to “pop the question” around here?
I believe a lot of us really have not spent enough time ruminating upon what it really takes to consider a decision to make marriage plans. And make no mistake, my friends, this is the kind of thought that should go on long before you are ever in the position to actually act upon what you think and / or feel.
Indeed, getting engaged should never be a “knee-jerk” decision. In fact, nothing involving “jerks” of any kind should ever be a consideration.
So whether you are in a serious relationship right now or not, lets consider the top ten signs to look for when considering marriage:
1) You are attracted to each other
First, you absolutely, positively must be sexually attracted to the object of your affection. This is NOT being shallow, as weve discussed previously. Dont you appreciate how I freely endorse making this a priority? Thought so. Feel better now? LOL
2) You actually like each other
Laugh if you will, but Ive seen first-hand how couples justify long-term relationships despite getting on each others nerves big time. I personally dont get it, and if you deserve what you want I surely hope you dont want that.
3) Youve spent enough time together to really know each other
Lets not talk in terms of calendar time here. If a couple is in a long-distance-relationship (LDR) for two years and see each other once a month for two days, they may see each other about as much as a couple who lives two blocks apart and has been joined at the hip since they met a month ago. When you know that youve seen the person at his or her most relaxed (and at his or her worst, for that matter), then and only then are you in a position to speculate regarding what the future really holds.
4) You are on the same page spiritually
Dont underestimate the importance of this. If you believe that God should be at the center of your relationship, it can only be that way if your would-be partner agrees. If this hasnt been talked about yet, make it a priority to do so. Even if you are both agnostic or atheist, for that matter, its still a good idea to discuss your world views and make sure you are in agreement on what your core beliefs are.
5) Your long-term goals are similar
If your futures are taking you in different directions, either someone is going to have to compromise, or your futures dont have each other in them. Period.
6) You know how to play together
Sure, she goes shoe shopping while he watches the NFL. But do you know how to enjoy leisure time together? Were not just talking about sex here? I always thought it would be amazing to find a woman who would want to go BMX racing with me. As it turns out, that wasnt so farfetched. Couples who play together stay together.
7) You both want to be married
Do both of you really desire marriage? If you feel you are trying to persuade someone out of the single life who still wants to be there then guess what…you are not making valuable use of your time.
The basics in your lives are handled
Are you mentally and physically healthy? Is your self-esteem in good shape? If you carry heavy concerns that consume you, its not time to invite someone else into your world permanently. After all, that would only give your heavy concerns someone else to consume. And thats not part of a balanced relationship.
9) You have no doubt in your mind that your partner is committed to you as you are to him/her
Ah yes…the “trust” factor. Kill all jealousy in order to ready yourself for a committed relationship. And make darn skippy sure thats okay to do. If there are signs your future husband or wife would cheat on you, then forgettaboutit. Really.
10) You have no doubt in your mind that you are committed to your partner as he/she is to you
Turnabout is fair play here. Are you completely sure you are trustworthy? Do you harbor fantasies about cheating on your future spouse? If you are focusing too much on someone else-especially if that “someone else” is potentially available to you, then my suggestion is to get that resolved before feigning “commitment” to someone who would be truly committed to you.
Whether you feel you are ready for marriage or not is okay. One should never feel pressured either way. The framework for a solid marriage with a great long-term prognosis can only be established when both partners truly want to be there…and believe wholeheartedly in both the future and in each other.
After all, isnt that what love is for?

Create Long Term Memories With Your Wedding Guest Book
Long after the wedding is over, the cake has been eaten, the presents opened, and the guest have left you will have your wedding guest book. This is a very important part of the wedding because it will be one of the most important mementos of your special wedding day. It is the one thing that you will go back to time and again to spark the memories and relive your special day. This can also be a very useful reminder of why you wanted to get married and hopefully a little light at the end of a tunnel through some difficult times if need be.
In fact many couples today have more then one wedding guestbook. However they both serve a little different purpose. There is the traditional wedding guestbook that was present at the wedding where all of the family signed in and then another one that was used at the reception. Today many couples are opted for a smaller service and a bigger reception. This way the service can be for very close family and a few friends but the reception can include a bunch of people and become a real hopping party. By having two guest books you can make sure everyone signs their name in the guest book and hopefully leave a little message.
The most traditional type of wedding guest book of course is the white book with a white feather pen for guest to sign their name, leave an address and even a little personalized message. However, there is nothing to say you have to stick with tradition and you might want to find a guest book that better fits the theme of your wedding or even the colors of your wedding. Today you can find a wide variety of guest books in just about any color you choose. Also you can find a wide variety of non traditional wedding guest books that are not even books but rather other objects that people can sign.
Another type of wedding guest book might be a scrapbook. A friend of mine had one of these at her wedding and she didnt even know it until the wedding reception. One of her bridesmaids had purchased a large scrapbook and then decorated the front cover and the first page with pictures of the bride and groom at different times in their relationship together. She then left the rest of the pages blank. Guest were then able to not only sign the book but leave any type of message that they wanted. The best thing about this was some of the more artistic guest felt encouraged by the blank page and took the time to put in fun poems, sayings and even small art work. This has become one of her most treasured possessions and something she often goes back to look at.
Another fun option can be easily put together with a large poster board with a few pictures of the couple mounted to it. Again you can encourage guests to sign the poster board and leave a message or saying next to their signatures. You probably can not find this type of guest book at our local wedding supply store however more companies and creating alternative wedding guest book ideas and you can easily find one online. If you can not find something that suits your particular situation these ideas can easily be made with very little expense or time.
As with many things these days wedding guest books can be found in a variety of different places. If you can not find what you are looking for locally try searching on the internet. There are more and more companies selling very specialized products on the internet due to the low overhead. You will be surprised at the wide variety of options out there if you just take some time to look around. While you are shopping dont forget to pick up a great pen to use for the signatures.
